Kangirciluku Imaq: Understanding the Ocean

This resource was co-produced with Kodiak community members to support student understanding of the ocean.  It is designed to address Kodiak Sugpiaq/Alutiiq Values and Alaska Native Values for the Curriculum as well as Science Standards for Alaska, and Alaska Cultural Standards. Teaching this unit in full will provide 9-12th grade students with an understanding of cultural and operational perspectives on how tides and currents behave in the ocean , traditional practices of travel and subsistence, and navigational practices from experienced knowledge bearers. Sugt’stun and Alutiit’stun terminology and frameworks are integrated throughout these resources.

Video resources link to the Cultural Connections to Alaska Science Playlist within the education friendly YouTube Channel Alaska Science for All.

A Canvas course will be made available with multimedia resources directly embedded within the course template soon.
